The Refiner

Max Colston

Horror Feature Screenplay

In Shiloh Falls, Missouri, townspeople begin receiving wax-sealed envelopes, each containing a single scripture verse that names the reader’s most private sin. Within minutes of opening one, the reader is dead by their own hand. Fifteen-year-old RAELYN HANLEY watches the deaths spread from strangers at her parish into her own home, where she wrestles a knife from her mother’s hands and still cannot save her. Her father ZEB and his lifelong best friend, SHERIFF SILAS TRENT, dismiss the letters as a cruel hoax. Then Trent traces them to their source: the verses are confessions, and FATHER MORROW is no priest but an occultist staging a town’s worth of sacrificial deaths to tear the veil and force the Second Coming.

The ritual works, but the Second Coming it forces is no salvation. A wrathful Son is born inside the packed church, arrived before His time and bent not on mercy but on judgment. One soul at a time, He begins to separate the saved from the damned. Then the last secret breaks open: Raelyn’s own father is the reason Rebecca Harmeyer, a girl who went missing a year ago, was never found. Raelyn has spent that entire year praying for her safe return. Forced to watch him answer for it, she throws herself between her father and the gun. She is spared. He is not. As the reckoning bleeds out past Shiloh Falls, she slips her hand into the figure’s open palm and walks on.
